What to Look For
We recommend checking your pet’s ears regularly to look for signs of infection. Healthy ears are clean with a minimal buildup of wax and no strong odor. Watch for the following signs that can indicate a possible ear infection:

• Excessive scratching and pawing at the head or ear
• Redness or swelling of the ear flap or ear canal
• Black, brown, or yellowish discharge
• Unpleasant odor
• Sensitive or painful to the touch
• Constant tilting of the head to one side
• Shaking the head back and forth
• Loss of balance or hearing
• Abnormal behavior such as disorientation, lethargy, or irritability

If you are observing any of these signs, we recommend scheduling an appointment for your pet so that the ears can be examined and any necessary treatments begun.
